Dermabrasion removes the damaged top layer of skin. This leaves patients with renewed, more youthful-looking skin. During dermabrasion, a wire brush or burr attached to an oscillating handle is used to scrape away the top layers of skin, making wrinkles and scars far less noticeable.

How Dermabrasion Is Performed

Before the treatment, it is recommended that you come in for a consultation. This will help the provider ensure that you are a good candidate for the treatment and not taking any medications that may get in the way of your recovery. When it’s time for your treatment at our office, the first step will be numbing the skin. This is usually done through local anesthesia to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. The provider will then hold your skin as the dermabrasion device is moved across the skin. The device has different tips that are designed to treat different-sized areas of skin. After the procedure, the skin will be wrapped in a moist dressing to keep it hydrated. You may also be asked to return the following day to have the dressings changed.

Benefits of Dermabrasion

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing treatment that reveals a new layer of skin. By removing the top layer of skin, common skin problems can be reduced. Some of the benefits of dermabrasion include the reduction of:

  • Fine wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Age spots
  • Scars from surgery or injury

Dermabrasion can also help with skin tone and texture after the initial recovery; patients can expect to see more even, radiant, and youthful-looking skin.

Recovery After Dermabrasion

After the procedure, the provider will wrap your skin in moist dressings. These may require a follow-up appointment so they can be changed and kept clean. Before your appointment, you will also be given self-care instructions to follow. This will include what activities to avoid, such as sun exposure, chlorine, and more. It will also include how to take care of your skin while it’s healing. Some of the most common side effects include redness, swelling, tingling, and aching. As your skin begins to heal scabs, or a crust may also form. If you are interested in dermabrasion, contact Texas Facial Plastic Surgery to schedule a consultation.
